Richard A. Kaplan has handled civil and criminal cases on both sides of the fence. As an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, he investigated and tried felony cases including nearly 40 trials to jury verdict and a larger number of court trials. He has also represented executives in grand jury investigations of alleged economic crimes. On the civil side he has defended class actions brought under RESPA, ERISA and various consumer fraud statutes; represented plaintiffs and defendants in 10b-5 actions; both sides in intellectual property litigation and handled expert witnesses on econometric and damages issues in securities fraud class actions. In addition Mr. Kaplan has served in executive (non-legal) positions for a Fortune 500 corporation and two of its subsidiaries and has co-owned and operated a small importing and distribution business. He is also a musician, avid golfer, and dog lover.
